Hazing

Navarro College offers co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as student organizations/clubs, band and musical groups, academic groups, cheerleading and athletics including any group or team that participates in National Collegiate Athletic Association competition, or a service, social, or similar group, whose members are primarily students. Students may elect to engage in or try out for these activities. Texas state law protects against all hazing offenses and requires all postsecondary educational institutions to provide a yearly report on hazing for all organizations recognized by the institution.

Note: All student organizations advisors and officers participate in annual risk management training as mandated by Texas Education Code Sec. 51.9361. This code specifically addresses hazing and the expectations of all campuses to refrain from activities that are counter to growth and participation in these extracurricular organizations.

Hazing Defined

Hazing means any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in an organization as listed in Texas Education Code Sec. 37.151.

Hazing Offense

A hazing offense occurs when someone:

  • Engages in hazing;

  • Solicits, encourages, directs, aids, or attempts to aid another in engaging in hazing;

  • Recklessly permits hazing to occur; or

  • Has firsthand knowledge of the planning of a specific hazing incident involving a student in an educational institution or has firsthand knowledge that a specific hazing incident has occurred and knowingly fails to report that knowledge in writing to the appropriate institution official.

It is a Class B misdemeanor for failing to report hazing and hazing incidents that do not cause bodily injury. Hazing leading to serious bodily injury is a Class A misdemeanor. If the hazing results in death, it is a state jail felony. Texas Education Code Sec. 37.152

Additional sanctions may be applied by Navarro College as outlined in Navarro College Student Handbook.
